Remember the flip phones of the 90s and early 2000s? There’re numerous people who really miss such phones and are nostalgic for the design, albeit they don’t want to be deprived of the convenience as well as the power of modern mobile phones. Well, that’s what Samsung has packed in its latest flagship device. Samsung W2018 combines the best features of smartphones and flip phones.
Samsung has revealed the W2018 smartphone at a launch event in Xiamen, China. The smart flip phone comes with a premium design together with dual displays. The South Korean giant has been introducing W series smartphones to raise charity funds for the past ten years. And the newly divulged Samsung W2018 has landed as a 10th-anniversary edition phone.
Smartphone makers are always endeavoring to come with the fastest-possible camera aperture. Currently, LG V30 holds the #1 position with its f/1.6 lens. However, Samsung may soon leave LG behind with its new W2018 flagship device. The clamshell phone comes packed with a 12MP sensor and an extraordinarily low f/1.5 aperture.
While that’s impressive enough on its own, the kicker here is that the aperture is actually variable, meaning that it can switch between f/1.5 and f/2.4 and offers Optical Image Stabilization. In simple words, when taking photos in well-lit areas, the camera will automatically switch to f/2.4 aperture and in the low-light, it will have a f/1.5 aperture. In this way, you can get better photos even when the light is dim.
The newest device is an attention-grabbing piece of hardware that consolidates a flip phone with a modern smartphone. Samsung W2018 features a 4.2-inch outer display and a 4.2-inch inner display. Although the dual screens are awesome, the truly neat feature is its physical dial-pad and directional buttons. Also, it offers advanced features such as Bixby support and a fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone.
On the internal hardware front, Samsung’s new luxurious smart flip phone offers specs similar to the Galaxy S8, including 6GB of RAM and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor. Apart from the obvious design changes, one difference between Samsung W2018 and Galaxy S8 is the camera.
However, the phone comes with a major downside: price. In case you think that the iPhone X was the priciest phone ever, let’s tell you that the W2018 is likely to be even worse. Samsung’s W2017 comes with a price tag of $3,000 and it has been anticipated that the W2018 will arrive with a hefty price tag.
The W2018 boasts a metal and glass combination body. It comes in two color variants: Elegant Gold and Platinum, featuring a D-pad and a numeric keypad for navigation purposes. The phone comes preinstalled with Android 7.1.1 Nougat OS.
In addition to this, Samsung W2018 sports some unique perks such as concierge service at airports and subways, free software support, and services at a reduced cost. For now, the device is set to launch in China and there’s no official word on whether it will see a release in other countries or not. If so, the price will likely be high enough, making sure that it remains a niche product.
