After previewing a new update for Windows and Mac back in August, Microsoft has announced that its new Skype design for desktop is launching today. Available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, the latest Skype update aims to make the user experience smoother while throwing in a few new features.
The airy new look is in line with the revamped Skype mobile update, which caught a lot of flak in July, so chances are that not everyone will dig the new design. According to the company, the Skype for desktop preview and the latest Skype iOS app enhanced the way you connect with your contacts and included expanded capabilities such as chat list, personalized themes, and @mentions. Now, Skype for Windows, Mac, and Linux brings all these exciting features and improvements to your desktop. It’s built on pristine technology that scales to billions of people on a reliable platform.
All thanks to the status updates feature, the new Skype design for desktop lets you set a mood message. You can organize your contact list by name, status or unread. It also allows you to pin people or groups to have them always close at hand.

The new desktop version of Skype is cloud-based, meaning that sharing files, images, and videos has become easier than ever. You can send files up to 300 MB by dragging and dropping them.
One of the most useful features of the new Skype design for desktop is the media gallery associated with each chat. This helps you quickly locate shared content from a conversation such as links, media, and files. The messaging app works across multiple platforms – desktop, mobile, smart speakers, and Xbox.
Its new notification panel enables users to catch up on missed messages at one place. You can directly jump to these notifications by clicking on them. When you’re in a video chat or a text conversation, the instant messaging and VoIP service provides you with reactions, @mentions, bots, and status updates to help you express yourself. For instance, Microsoft’s Scoop bot keeps you updated with the latest news, Giphy enables you to share GIFs with friends, while Hipmunk, Expedia, and StubHub bots help you book tickets.
