Use Amazon Echo to Call and Message Friends - For calling

In order to call someone via the Alexa app, you can navigate to the contacts screen, select a contact, and then tap on the phone button. For a hands-free experience, you can go to the Echo and enable a voice command: Alexa, call ‘name of contact’. On this stage, your friend’s Echo will glow and make a chiming noise; the device will also announce who is calling. At the same time, the recipient’s phone will also be ringing; your contacts can either use Echo or the phone to answer your call. On the Echo device, the contact can take the phone by speaking ‘Alexa, answer the call’. And on the phone, the recipient can receive the call as a normal call. And you can also disconnect the call by saying, ‘Alexa, Ignore’, and to discontinue the call, simply say, ‘Alexa, hang up’.

How to Send a Message Using Amazon Echo

Like calling your friends from Echo, you can also send a message to someone using Amazon Echo. You can either use Alexa app or Echo device for this function.

Use Amazon Echo to Call and Message Friends - For messages

In order to message someone using the Alexa app, you can navigate to the contacts list and select a contact. Once done, you can tap on the message button. This will start a new conversation page with that contact. From here, you can either tap on the Microphone button to record a voice message or simply press the Keyboard button and then type a message.

If you’d like to send a voice message, you can speak to Alexa using Echo device by saying ‘Alexa, message ‘name of contact’. If you want to send a text message from Alexa, you can select the text field rather than pressing or holding Microphone icon. Once you’ve selected the text field, just open the keyboard and type your message. And finally, choose the Send button.

When the recipient receives the message, Echo device will glow and make a chiming sound. Here, Alexa won’t announce that there is a message from somebody. But the recipients will always get a notification on their phones and they can view or listen to the message in the Alexa app. If they want to send a reply, they can do this from the app itself.

In the Alexa app, the recipient has to speak, ‘Alexa, play the message’ and Alexa will play that voice message sent by you. If you sent a text message, Alexa will transcribe the text and speak it aloud. So this way you can use Amazon Echo to call and message friends.
