VLC developers have been working very hard to add Chromecast support to VLC Media Player. Finally, their efforts have paid off well. Now you can easily stream VLC Media files to Chromecast and watch them on your TV. All you need is to follow some simple instructions mentioned in the tutorial. Important Note: The feature isn’t available in the official version of VLC media player. You have to download a build of the media player from a third-party source instead.
- A PC running latest version of Windows
- Nightly build of VLC Media Player version 3.0
- Google Chromecast

Important Note: Before you proceed further with the instructions, ensure that your Chromecast is ON. Also, both your PC and Chromecast should be connected to the same network.
Simple steps to stream VLC Media files to Chromecast
Step 1. First of all, open VLC Media Player on your PC
Step 2. Navigate to Video > Renderer > Local > Scan. The media player will scan for nearby devices
Step 3. Once again, go to Video > Renderer > Your Chromecast. This will connect the VLC Media Player to your Chromecast
Step 4. Play a video file in the VLC media player. There are two ways to do this:
- Drag and drop a file from your PC onto the VLC window
- Navigate to Media > Open File Menu and select the file you want to play
The choice is all yours. You can choose the way you find suitable
Step 5. After you try to play the video, you’ll see an “insecure site” prompt. Just click on the View Certificate button to view the security certificate of your Chromecast
Step 6. Now, click on Accept Permanently option in the next screen prompt
After this, the VLC Media file will start playing on the Chromecast. You can use the controls in the VLC window to pause/play, fast forward, or rewind it.
After this, whenever you want to stream VLC to Chromecast in near future, just click Video > Render menu > Scan. The media player will scan for the Chromecast and automatically begin streaming. So, just enjoy!
