Where to find hard drive icons for macOS
Before you proceed further to change your Mac’s hard drive icons, you’ll need to find a few custom icons first. These icons should be 512×512 pixels and in .icns format.
Here are a few sources where you can find such icons:
- You can download hard drive icons in .png format from the web and then convert them to .icns using online converters
- There is a website called IconArchive where you can download countless icons in .icns format
- You can also download a myriad of hard drive icons from DaviantArt website
- Some external hard drive manufacturers like Lacie and Akitio offer icons to match the drives they sell

Change hard drive icons on Mac in simple steps
Step 1. First of all, open the folder where you’ve downloaded your icons
Step 2. Select the icons you want to use for your hard drive by right-clicking on them and then click on Copy “icon name” (for example Copy “Intel.icns”)
Step 3. In the next step, paste the icon file onto your hard drive
However, before this you’ll have to ensure that the drive for which you want to give a custom icon is connected to your Mac
Step 4. Open the finder and select your Mac under the Devices section. You’ll see a list of all drives connected to your Mac
Step 5. Right-click on the drive for which you want to give a custom icon and then click Get Info. It will display the information screen of your hard drive
Step 6. If you click on the icon at the top of this window, you’ll see a blue highlight. This indicates that the icon has been selected
Step 7. Now, press Cmd+V keyboard combination to paste your icon
Step 8. In the next step, you’ll be prompted to enter your username and password. Just type in the details and hit Enter
You’ll notice that the icon of your hard-drive has been changed. You can repeat the similar process for changing other hard drive icons too.
Undo the change
In case you want to change back the hard drive icon:
- Open Get Info for the drive once again, select the icon, and then press the Delete key
