In order to make Facebook a better venue for hot news and real-time discussions, the social media giant has been releasing a series of updates in its News Feed feature for some time. Now in its latest attempt, Facebook alters News Feed to fight against fake news. The update shows users stories that are most authentic and relevant to them.
The latest change follows a chain of complaints that users’ News Feed is spammed with unauthenticated and misleading content. To get rid of fake news, Facebook is adding new markers to each post for determining whether a post is authentic or not. To do this, the company classified source pages to identify whether they regularly post spam or try to game feed by asking for likes, shares, or comments. Facebook said,
“We then used posts from these Pages to train a model that continuously identifies whether posts from other Pages are likely to be authentic. For example, if Page posts are often being hidden by people reading them, that’s a signal that it might not be authentic.”
The other determining factor in curbing FB fake news is a model that the social media platform says it has trained to identify common signs associated with authenticity. Facebook doesn’t go into many details about what these changes might be.
Facebook updates News Feed algorithm to always keep an eye on real-time signals to determine post’s relevancy such as whether one of your friends has just commented on your post. From now on, the company will consider how signals change in real time.
The move takes place as Facebook fake news results in many complaints that users have got a spammed content in their News Feed. Facebook alters News Feed as it has faced intense scrutiny for its role in ever-evolving hoaxes and misinformation.
The social media giant is rolling out the feature to personalize News Feed on the basis of user’s interests. Well Cathcart, the vice president of Facebook’s product management, wrote in a blog post,
“This is designed to help make sure people don’t miss important topics being discussed on Facebook that might not show up in their News Feed.”
Facebook alters News Feed to show the trending and breaking news from the top-ranking topics on your wall. The main motive behind this push is to give a boost to stories that are going viral in real-time right now. This change can also help the social media giant to compete with Twitter for in-the-moment news sharing.
