Best Google Maps tips and tricks
Use offline Maps
We all know that you always require an internet connection to use Google Maps. However, at some instances you may not have access to internet (say your mobile data pack ends or you’re stuck in the area where there is no network). In such cases, we recommend you to download maps of specific areas, so that you can access them later without internet.
Here’s how to do so:
- Launch Google Maps on your phone
- Tap the hamburger button in the upper left corner of the app screen
- Select Offline area
- Tap the plus button in the lower right corner
- Drag the map to the area you want to download (pinch to include more or less of the map)
- Tap Download
The latest updates gives you an option to choose where you want to store downloaded maps on the internal storage or on a removable SD card on an Android device. Otherwise, you’ll need to select the settings button in upper right corner and tap Storage preferences
Most of these maps are in excess of 100 MB. So, we recommend to do it over Wi-Fi if you’ve a data plan limit
Use Google Maps on Wi-Fi only
Believe it or not, Google Maps can cost heavily on your mobile data especially if you’ve limited data pack left in your mobile. So, to minimize data while navigating, you can set Google Maps use to Wi-Fi networks only. After this, Maps and navigation will only work in your downloaded areas or if you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network.
To set Google Maps use to Wi-Fi only:
- Tap the hamburger button in the upper left corner of the Android app
- Scroll down and select Settings
- Tap the toggle switch beside Wi-Fi only
On the other hand if you’ve an iPhone, you may not see the option. However, you can also set Google Maps use to Wi-Fi only. You just need to:
- Go to Settings > Cellular and switch the toggle for Google Maps
Mark important places on the Map
You can also mark important places in Google Maps, so that the app can alert you of traffic before you leave your house. This will make your life much easier.
To mark important places on the map:
- Open Your places menu in Google Maps
- Tap action overflow button for Home
- Select Change icon and choose one from the list of stickers
- Tap Save when you’re finished and your home will be added on the map
This way you can add other places as well!
Use your voice and gestures
While driving, you’ll never want to continue typing on Google Maps. However, you may still need the app every now and then to navigate directions. In such cases, you can use voice commands. Google maps support various commands like what’s my ETA? And where do I turn next? All to need to do is:
- To tap the microphone button above the search button
- Speak the command
Apart from this, you can also mute or unmute the voice guidance, toggle satellite view, ask for alternate routes, or toggle traffic by voice.
Earn extra rewards
Very few people know that Google Maps offer rewards for completing simple tasks like reviewing places you visit, uploading photos, answering questions about places, adding and editing new locations and much more.
For each task, you get points. Once you’ve earned enough points, you can trade them for perks like early access to new Google products and features, participating in exclusive workshop or 1TB of free Google Drive storage.
