iCloud family sharing has emerged as a useful feature for families, who want to share each other’s iBooks, iTunes, and App Store purchases without sharing accounts. The feature lets you make family purchases with the same credit card, share photos, a family calendar, approve your kid’s expenses from your own device and much more. This way the iCloud family sharing helps you stay connected with each other.

How to set up iCloud Family Sharing?

What you’ll need?

To set up iCloud Family Sharing, you’ll need:

  • An Apple ID signed in to iTunes and iCloud
  • Mac with OS X Yosemite or later/ iPad, iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 8 and later

Start a family group

One adult in the family known as the family organizer can set up Family Sharing for the group from his iOS or Mac device. When you set up the feature, you’ll be asked to confirm two things:

  • You agree to pay for purchases initiated by the family members you invite
  • You’ve a valid payment method associated with your account (Credit card or debit card)

Once you’ve confirmed both things, it’s time to setup family feature. To set up iCloud Family Sharing:

On your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch

  • Navigate to Settings > iCloud
  • Tap Set Up Family Sharing, then tap Get Started
  • Now you’ve to confirm that you intend to be the family organizer and have already signed in with your personal Apple ID
  • Follow onscreen instructions

On your Mac

  • Go to Apple menu > System Preferences, and click iCloud
  • Click Set Up Family
  • Follow onscreen instructions

Invite people to join your family

Once you’ve successfully set up Family Sharing, you can invite your family members to join the group. To invite other people to join your family, you’ll need to follow some of the simple steps mentioned below.

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  • Navigate to Settings > iCloud > Family > Add Family Member
  • Enter your family member’s name and e-mail ID
  • Follow onscreen instructions

On your Mac

  • Go to Apple menu > System Preferences, and click iCloud
  • Click Manage Family
  • Click +, and follow onscreen instructions

In case your family member is with you, they can enter their Apple ID password on your device to accept the invitation. Otherwise you can send them an invitation which they can accept from their device later.

See if your family member has accepted the invitation

After you’ve sent the invitation, you can check its status under the person’s name in Settings > iCloud > Family on your iOS device. On your Mac, you’ve to navigate to Apple menu > System preferences, click iCloud and select Manage Family. Now you’ve to select the name of the person to see status of the invitation.

Select Resend invitation, if you want to send the invitation once again.

Join a family group

If you’re not a family organizer and want to join a family group, you’ll need to do the following:

  • On your Mac, go to Apple menu > System Preferences > iCloud > Manage Family
  • On your iOS device, navigate to Settings > iCloud > Invitations
  • In case the invitation is sent to your email address, you can respond directly from there

When you join a family group, you’ll be asked to:

  • Confirm your Apple ID and Password
  • Select if you want to share your content and the Apple ID you want to share from
  • Select if you want to share your information

Once you’re done with all this, you can share all your music, movies, TV shows, books and apps with your family members, receive an Apple music family membership and invited you family members to join, share photos and videos, use the Family calendar and much more.
