Knowing so, it’s very important that you back up your iPhone to meet any unwanted circumstances. Doing so can save you from many problems in case your phone gets stolen or damaged. Even if your phone gets lost, you can still have a secured copy of data saved to your computer or online.

Primarily, there are two methods you can use to back up your iPhone:

  • Using iTunes
  • Using iCloud

Here, we’ll discuss both the methods to back up your iPhone in detail. Let’s get started:

  • Method 1: Using iTunes

This is the most common method used to back up your iPhone. It is simple and easy to implement. Install iTunes app (if not) on your computer and follow some simple steps mentioned below:

Step 1. Start iTunes

Launch iTunes and connect your device to your computer.

Step 2. Follow onscreen instructions

If this is the first time you’ve connected your device to computer. You’ll be prompted to tap ‘Trust’ on your iPhone’s screen. Follow onscreen instructions and proceed further.

Step 3. Select your device

Now you’ve to select your iPhone when it appears in iTunes

Step 4. Unlock your device

In case your phone is locked with a passcode, you’ve to unlock it before proceeding further with the backup process. You may also be asked to enter your passcode.

Step 5. Select ‘This Computer’ option

Navigate to the Backups section and select ‘This computer’. It will allow iTunes to back up your iPhone in your PC, thus, ultimately saving your iCloud storage space.

Step 6. Start backup process

Click back up now

Click ‘Back Up Now’ button. This will begin the backup process.

Step 7. Wait for the backup process to complete

Now wait for some time to let the backup process complete.

After completion you can see your backup finished successfully in iTunes > Devices. It will display the name of your device along with the date and time your iTunes backup was created. In case your backup is encrypted, you’ll see  icon beside your device name.

  • Method 2: Using iCloud

In case you don’t use iTunes on your computer and want to use an automated backup system, then you can backup your iPhone with iCloud. For this, you’ve to follow some simple steps mentioned below:

Step 1. Connect your device to Wi-Fi

First of all connect your iPhone to a Wi-Fi network available nearby.

Step 2. Tap Settings, scroll down and tap iCloud

Open the Settings app by tapping the icon on your iPhone, then scroll down and tap iCloud to open it.

Step 3. Scroll down and tap Backup

Once you’ve successfully navigated to iCloud, scroll down and tap Backup.

Step 4. Toggle iCloud Backup option ON

Now toggle the iCloud Backup option ON. This will set your iPhone for the backup process.

Step 5. Begin the backup process immediately

Tap ‘Back UP Now’ option on the iCloud screen if you want to back up your iPhone right now. Clicking it will prompt the backup process.

Step 6. Manage backed up items

Once you’ve successfully taken backup of your iPhone, it’s time to manage backed up items. Here you can customize what gets backed up in future. You can choose to disable items which you don’t need to save storage space.

To disable items which you don’t want to be backed up:

  • Navigate to iCloud Settings menu < select Storage < Manage Storage
  • Now, tap your iPhone’s backup
  • Scroll through the list of backed up items, and toggle off items you don’t want to back up
