Twitter is currently testing a new tweet format doubling the 140 character limit to 280, so you can more freely fit your thoughts into a single tweet. Although the feature is presently available to selected users only, there’s a little trick that you can pull off to get the additional space right away. Here’s how to enable 280 characters on Twitter with ease.
While the 280 characters on Twitter may come as a surprise move, the social media giant has been quietly making its platform more flexible for months. In 2017 alone, it has removed photos, links, quotes, and even @replies being counted against the 140-character limit. And most recently, Twitter has rolled out notification filters to mute trolls, night mode for desktop, new Tweetstorm feature, and Popular Articles feature.
Twitter Product Manager, Aliza Rosen, said in a blog post that the latest change is intended to remove a major constraint for users hoping that it makes sharing their thoughts easier than before. She said,
“Our research shows us that the character limit is a major cause of frustration for people Tweeting in English, but it is not for those Tweeting in Japanese.”
280 character tweets are still in the beta phase and only available to a small group for now. However, the company didn’t say when the new 280 characters on Twitter will roll out to everyone. Based on earlier updates, it can take months.

The official rollout is still to be decided, but there’s a straightforward and hassle-free way to enable 280 character tweets right now using Chrome and a little light coding. A web developer Juliette Pretot has created a bookmarklet tool to streamline the process. Here’re the steps to activate 280 characters on Twitter:
Enable 280 Characters on Twitter
- Navigate to the Pretot’s page and bookmark the Tweet 280 link
- Once bookmarked, head over to the TweetDeck web app and log into your Twitter account
- You’ll see that your account is separated into a few columns
- Click on the bookmarklet you have created in the step-1 explained above
- Click on the Compose button that looks like a blue feather in the top-right corner
Bingo! You have access to 280 character tweets on Twitter. Click on the Tweet button to send your message. You can use 280 characters for replies, images, quotes, and links.
The process was quite easy, wasn’t it? All you need to remember is to use the TweetDeck interface and click on the bookmarklet tool before composing your tweets. Enjoy the pristine Twitter freedom!
