In an attempt to make its platform a better venue for trending stories, Twitter has rolled out a new feature for its Android and iOS apps. Dubbed as the Popular Articles feature, it shows the most shared or discussed stories by people you follow.
You can find the new feature in Twitter’s Explore tab. As its name suggests, the Popular Articles feature will show you a list of stories that are popular at the moment and are being tweeted by people you follow. Apart from this, it also displays links of articles that are popular in your particular location. Once you tap on a story headline, the link opens within the built-in Twitter browser.
“The Popular Articles feature is just what it sounds like — a list of stories people you follow on Twitter are currently tweeting about, or otherwise engaging with. It also shows links to articles popular in your particular location.”
The company said that it has been experimenting with numerous ways to surface the most important stories, especially for more casual Twitter users who may miss things in a rapidly-scrolling timeline. Twitter’s stock price was hit earlier in July when it disclosed that its userbase hadn’t grown in Q2. In the U.S., its monthly active users have been fallen by 2Mn. The social media network is continuously facing competition from Snapchat and Instagram, especially among teen users.

Twitter keeps looking for ways to enhance its service to better meet the needs of its diverse audience. Earlier in September, it has worked on the Tweetstorm feature intended for making lengthy tweets easier to write and post. Just a few months back, the company has also added a new DM filter to keep strangers out of your direct messages. And now, Twitter has rolled out its Popular Articles feature to show you stories shared or liked by people you follow.
It has been reported that Twitter’s new Popular Articles feature for Android and iOS is similar to an app called Nuzzel, which aggregates news articles that have been shared and liked by people in your social network. However, ranking the most popular stories isn’t a new idea; Facebook has already a trending news section. It will be quite interesting to see if the Popular Articles feature will help Twitter gain popularity among its users or not.
